These regulations govern the handling, storing and transporting of the materials in order to facilitate and maintain a safe environment. To minimize the risks and exposure to these materials, SafeWork highly recommends hiring a licensed asbestos removal contractor to perform these duties.

Regulations adhered to will vary based on whether the waste is residential or commercial, and the specific provisions covered under state laws.

Asbestos in Australia

Once referred to as the ‘miracle mineral’, asbestos has a lot of very useful properties. Because of this mineral’s content and make-up, it’s durable fibers are resistant to heat, fire and various other chemicals. So, over the years, it has been used in a vast number of everyday products, from protective fire resistant gear to building materials. Today, however, it is now well known across the globe as being the cause of a fatal lung cancer that is called Mesothelioma.

Within the last 35 years, more than 10,000 Australians have died from mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can be described as a rare cancer that comes from contact with asbestos materials. Second only to the United Kingdom, Australia is known for having one of the worst mesothelioma death rates in the world. Even though these figures are already alarming, cancer specialists have predicted that there is a further increase of deaths within the next 40 years. In fact, the death totals are expected rise by as much as 25,000 within this timeframe. Unfortunately, one of the primary reasons for such alarming rates is due to New South Wales and Queenland being a huge part of the asbestos mining industry.

Additionally, asbestos can be found in places all over the area including the following:

  • Some packing materials
  • Heaters and roofing materials
  • Automotive parts like clutch facings and brake linings
  • Ceiling tiles, gaskets and paint
  • Cement sheeting used for buildings
  • Fire protection products
  • Tanks for holding chemicals
  • Wire insulation and floor underlays
  • Components in small appliances

How To Identify Asbestos

Identifying asbestos in any facility is not always as simple as some people may think. Because it has no special odor or other easily identifiable properties in a structure, there are specific checklists provided to assist with the discovery of its presence. Even though the government of Australia banned its use and all imports in 1980, some construction sites have still used asbestos via stockpiling and in recycled construction materials. Therefore, the identification of these materials must be done in a specific manner. For instance, asbestos materials may be identified in a special walkthrough of the entire facility (i.e. ceilings, cellars, shafts, storage rooms, bathrooms etc.) Another means of ensuring a facility is free of asbestos is to have it tested by a professionally trained asbestos representative. If you thin,k you have asbestos on your property you con contact Pro Asbestos Removal Sydney to perform testing an analysis of samples for you.

Asbestos Disposal

Asbestos disposal must be recorded by waste transporters. Prior to the disposal of any asbestos waste materials, it is important that transporters adhere to all of the laws established in the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulations 2014. This legislation applies to asbestos materials that falls within the parameters of 100 kilograms or 10 square metres of asbestos sheeting. More can be read on the asbestos waste monitoring guidelines here. A brief summary of this legislation has been provided below.

  • Waste must be transported in a vehicle that is covered and leakproof.
  • Loads of waste must be disposed of at a landfill that has been pre-approved by the law.
  • Before dumping asbestos waste, the waste transporters must check with their landfill operators or their local council first.
  • Laws make it illegal for anyone to dispose of this waste in a domestic garbage bin.
  • Licensed asbestos removal contractor is required when removing friable asbestos or more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos from the home.
  • Consignment numbers for waste loads are required for tracking purposes. Numbers can be requested at wastelocate.epa.nsw.gov.au

Because transporting asbestos is such a hazardous and dangerous job, the government has established specific regulations that asbestos removalists must adhere to. Non compliance can result in significant fines imposed.

The Environmental Protction Agency has setup an online portal call WasteLocate, which is designed for waste transporters to enter key information about the disposal of asbestos waste. This system makes it easy for the Australian government to track the site of generation and the final disposal point.
